Monster Energy-Backed Mt. Bike Racer Sam Hill Wins Austrian Stop On UCI World Cup Mt. Bike Racing Series
Monster Energy/Iron Horse/Mad Catz team member moves to second place in o/a standings
CARLSBAD, Calif., (June 17, 2005) – Monster Energy-backed Sam Hill
recently won the Schladming, Austria, round of the UCI World Cup Mt.
Bike Series, winning the dowhill comp by a convincing 8.17 seconds
over fellow Australian racer Chris Kovarik.
Prior to his win in Austria, Hill placed fifth at a difficult and mud-
strewn course in Willingen, Germany. So after three of eight events
on the World Cup circuit, Hill is in second place – only 50 points
out of the lead.
“My dw-link Iron Horse bike was dialed perfectly and I was able to
qualify in first position on the highly technical Schladming course,”
said Hill. “Qualifying first allowed me to start last, so I was able
to check out some of the course, then get information on other
portions of the course from the Monster Energy/Iron Horse/Mad Catz
team members. We ran into some rain, which made the course slick and
muddy. But at the split I was almost six seconds faster than the next
racer.”
In addition to Sam’s win, Monster Energy-backed Justin Havukainen
finished 22nd (at Schladming) and is ranked 24th overall in the
series. Teammate Scarlett Hagen placed seventh and is in 13th place
overall in the women’s division.
With the win at Schladming – his first of the year – Hill pulled to
within 50 points of series leader Greg Minnaar. Team Monster Energy/
Iron Horse/Mad Catz will have this next week off before traveling to
Quebec, Brazil and New Mexico for three straight weeks of World Cup
racing. For more information on the team and races, check out
